Support for macOS 10.12 Sierra and iOS 10

With the first public beta releases of macOS 10.12 Sierra and iOS 10 now available, it’s an opportune time to talk about our apps’ compatibility with the new OSs.

From the testing we’ve done so far, there don’t seem to be any major problems with Stay, AirVolume, or Knit Counter on the new versions of macOS and iOS. That said, beta operating systems are subject to frequent change, so we don’t officially support running any of our apps on macOS 10.12 or iOS 10 until both operating systems are out of beta and publicly released.

We have new versions of Stay, AirVolume, and Knit Counter in development, and our aim is to ensure that any compatibility fixes that are required to support the new operating systems are included in these new releases.

If you’re already running any of our apps on a beta OS and you notice problems, please let us know so that we can work on fixes as early as possible. You can contact us by email at support@cordlessdog.com or on Twitter at @cordlessdog.

OS X 10.11 El Capitan support

Update 30th September 2015: Stay 1.2.5 has been released

With a new version of OS X on the horizon, we’re starting to finish up work on the next version of Stay. This year though, we thought we’d try something a little different and make beta versions available as we go.

So with that, version 1.2.5b8 of Stay is now available and can be downloaded here.

The usual beta caveats apply:

  • Beta versions aren’t tested as extensively as release versions are, so things may be broken.
  • Make a backup of your Stay configuration (copy the folder at ~/Library/Application Support/Stay) before running the beta, just in case.
  • If you run into any problems, please let us know via email (support@cordlessdog.com), or on Twitter (@cordlessdog).

Here’s the list of changes in Stay 1.2.5b8:

General Changes

  • Beta compatibility with OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
  • Stay can now store and restore windows when there are multiple copies of an application running simultaneously.
  • Stay 1.2.5b8 requires a minimum of OS X 10.10.4.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed a bug that prevented hot keys from working under certain circumstances.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Stay to sometimes automatically restore windows unnecessarily.
  • Fixed a bug causing Stay to correctly resize but not reposition windows when restoring under certain conditions.
  • Fixed a bug that made it impossible to edit shell script actions under certain circumstances.
  • Fixed a crash in the window linking interface.
  • Fixed a crash in the preferences interface.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the progress window from being displayed on OS X 10.11.

AirVolume 1.0 released

Today marks the release of a new Cordless Dog app for OS X called AirVolume.

AirVolume improves the experience of using iTunes with AirPlay, by allowing you to control the volume in iTunes using the volume keys on your Mac’s keyboard.

AirVolume doesn’t take control of your volume keys indiscriminately though: it monitors iTunes and and automatically enables and disables itself as you enable or disable AirPlay, or play and pause music.

And best of all, AirVolume is completely free!

  • New preferences and status bar icons.
  • Better progress feedback during long store and restore operations.
  • Reliability improvements for Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox, Terminal, iTerm 2, iTunes, Messages, Reminders, and Tweetbot.

Bug Fixes:

  • Worked around a bug in OS X that caused windows to disappear when repositioned by Stay under certain circumstances.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause a hidden app to be incorrectly unhidden when restoring windows with multiple Desktops enabled.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented the use of window linking with windows not on the main screen.

Stay 1.2.4 will only run on versions of OS X from 10.9 (Mavericks) onwards. Stay 1.2.3 remains available for use on OS X 10.8 and can be downloaded here.

RavExporter 1.0 released

Cordless Dog is going back to its knitting roots with the release of RavExporter for iPhoto and Aperture.

RavExporter is a pair of plugins for iPhoto and Aperture that export photos directly to your Ravelry projects and stash. With RavExporter, you can easily add photos to existing projects or stash items, or create new ones, all within iPhoto and Aperture.

Trial versions of both plugins are available here:

Stay 1.2.3 released

Version 1.2.3 of Stay is now available and can be downloaded here.

General Changes:

  • Stay is now compatible with OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
  • Stay now requires a minimum of OS X 10.8. Stay 1.2.2 remains available for users of OS X 10.6 and 10.7.

Bug Fixes:

  • Added a workaround for a problem that could cause Stay to restore Tweetbot’s windows incorrectly.
  • Other minor bug fixes.

Please note that the process for granting Accessibility access to Stay has changed on Mavericks. There is a guide to the new process available here.

Stay 1.2.3 will only run on versions of OS X from 10.8 (Mountain Lion) onwards. Stay 1.2.2 remains available for use on OS X 10.6 and 10.7 and can be downloaded here.

The App Store version of Stay 1.2.3 has been submitted to Apple and is currently awaiting review. The non-App Store version of Stay honours App Store purchases and will run fully registered, so App Store users who wish to upgrade to version 1.2.3 immediately can simply download and use the non-App Store version of Stay.

Knit Counter 1.3.4 and ConvertKnit 1.0.2 released

Knit Counter 1.3.4 and ConvertKnit 1.0.2 are now available for download from the App Store.

With these updates both Knit Counter and ConvertKnit now properly support the iPhone 5’s larger screen. Knit Counter also now displays project images in the project list.

Please note that both Knit Counter and ConvertKnit require a minimum of iOS 5.1 to run.

Knit Counter 1.3.3 released

Version 1.3.3 of Knit Counter is now available for download from the App Store.

General Changes:

  • Knit Counter now requires a minimum of iOS 5.1; unfortunately I no longer have the ability to test Knit Counter on prior iOS versions. Users who cannot upgrade to iOS 5.1 can of course continue to use Knit Counter 1.3.2.

Feature Additions:

  • Added additional yarn info fields for WPI, number of skeins, and gauge.

Bug Fixes:

  • Corrected some minor visual bugs.
  • It is now possible to increment a linked counter in response to the source counter’s value reaching zero.
  • Other minor bug fixes.

Stay 1.2.2 released

Version 1.2.2 of Stay is now available.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed a bug that could cause windows to briefly flicker and the frontmost app to lose focus when launching an app with windows stored in Stay.
  • Fixed compatibility problem with Firefox Nightly and Firefox Aurora.
  • Other minor bug fixes.

Version 1.2.2 is a minor release, primarily issued to fix a bug with Stay’s “Restore Windows as applications are launched” preference that was affecting users with Spaces enabled. Our apologies to users affected by this rather annoying bug.

Version 1.2.2 will also be the final version of Stay officially supported on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). When the next version of Stay is released it will be built only for Lion and Mountain Lion, with version 1.2.2 being kept available for Snow Leopard users.
